Auditor-General not accountable to the JTB

THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE ANNOUNCEMENT by the Jamaica Tourist Board's chairman concerning allegations of missing money indicates how far down we have gone in the standard of accountability to the people. We have reached the stage where the peoples elected representatives are left to look on helplessly while some appointed official determines whether or not fraud has been committed with respect to public funds.
This comes about because the Auditor-General has chosen to report to the Tourist Board instead of to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and by extension to the people we elected to administer our affairs. Somebody has got to put a stop to this nonsense. The Opposition is making correct, if infrequent sounds, but it should also be mobilising public awareness and response to the outrageous manner in which public business is conducted in this country.
