ST. ELIZABETH:
CHAIRMAN OF the People's National Party (PNP) Region Five and Minister of Water and Housing, Donald Buchanan, has confirmed that the party has chosen the Reverend Stanley Redwood to be its candidate for the Ipswich division in the upcoming Local Government elections.
Speaking in an interview with The Gleaner yesterday, Mr. Buchanan said that there were two other persons who had expressed interest in representing the party in the division, however, one was ruled ineligible, and the other voluntarily withdrew, making the way clear for Reverend Redwood.
Two months ago The Gleaner broke the story that the Reverend Redwood, having lost the constituency of North West St. Elizabeth to the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) J.C. Hutchinson, was eyeing the Ipswich division. At the time, the defeated PNP candidate was at the centre of a national debate, after he wrote a letter to Prime Minister P.J. Patterson, who is also president of the PNP, seeking his assistance in offsetting a $700,000 debt which the constituency executive had incurred after the October 16 General Election.
Mr. Buchanan also explained that with the appointment of the Reverend Redwood, the party had finalised candidates for all 15 divisions in St. Elizabeth, and the next step was to start making preparation on the ground for the polls.
