THE UNIVERSITY of the West Indies won the top honours in the Windalco-sponsored Jamaica Table Tennis Association's club league with victories in the men's Division One and the women's finals at the University of Technology on Sunday.
Led by two victories from Nigel Webb, UWI defeated Donic Supreme 3-1 in the Division One final, and with former national champion Kaydian Carney also winning two matches, clipped defending champions Pembroke Hall 3-2 in the women's final.
On a day when four new champions were crowned, Systems & Innovations won the Division Two title with a 3-1 victory over I&S, and Cable & Wireless won Division Three with a 3-1 triumph over Pembroke Hall 11.
In the Division One final, Webb defeated Phillip Drummond 3-0 and Christopher Marsh 3-2 with Robert Green putting away Altamont Henry 3-1. Marsh secured Donic Supreme's lone victory with a 3-1 conquest of Alphanso Morris.
In the women's final, Carney defeated Janelle Morris and national champion Collette Palmer 3-0 while Michelle Harris defeated Morris 3-0.
In what was a close and exciting encounter, Pembroke Hall's two victories came from Palmer, who defeated Harris 3-0, and Andrene Hart, who clipped Charlene Chin-See 3-2.
Action in the Division Two final saw Andrew Morgan stop national junior representatives Kane Watson and Nicardo Clarke by identical 3-1 scorelines with Mark Higgins defeating former many-time national women's champion Sandra Riettie 3-1.
Clarke defeated Stephen Carty 3-1 to prevent a shutout of I&S.
In the Division Three final, Jide Lewis defeated Donald Drummond 3-0, Mardi McGrath defeated Giovanni Greaves 3-0, Luke McIntosh defeated Charles Brown 3-1 with Lennox Stewart winnng one for Pembroke Hall 11 with a 3-0 victory over Errol Nicholas.
The semi-final results were as follows:
Division One - UWI 3, defending champions UTech 2; Donic Supreme 3, Purples 0.
Division Two - System & Innovations 3, defending champions Pembroke Hall 2; I&S 3, Cable & Wireless 2.
Division Three - Pembroke Hall 11 3, Windalco Juniors 2; Cable & Wireless 3, defending champions Pembroke Hall 1 2.
