Med techs back on the job
published: Thursday | January 23, 2003

THE INDUSTRIAL Disputes Tribunal (IDT) yesterday gave medical technologists and the Government one week to complete discussions on their parity dispute and report back to the Tribunal.

The parties are to report back to the IDT on Thursday, January 30. Unless some progress is made which is likely to lead to a resolution of the dispute, the IDT would then go ahead with its arbitration proceedings.

The decision was taken at a meeting which followed the resumption of work yesterday by the technologists. They had been on strike since last week Thursday, in support of their claim that they are entitled to the same pay as Government-employed scientific officers.

The technologists are part of the essential services and were breaching the Labour and Industrial Relations Act (LRIDA) by going on strike. If convicted, they could face fines of up to $50,000 plus $2,000 for each day that the strike lasted.
