FALMOUTH, Trelawny:
WENDELL 'BULL Bull' Stewart, former Member of Parliament for North Trelawny, is again embroiled in a selection controversy within the People's National Party (PNP).
Stewart, who was dumped by the party as candidate for the constituency in the October 16 General Election, announced his intention to run for the Falmouth division in the local government election, recently.
He maintains that the selection process is not complete, but his opponent, Garth Wilkinson, is equally determined that the selection has already been made and that he has the nod of the party. Mr. Wilkinson said that he was introduced to the division at the weekend as the candidate. But, Stewart maintained that while Wilkinson was introduced he had not been selected.
Some of Stewart's supporters are convinced that something is awry with the selection process and are very vocal against his non-selection. At a meeting of the former MP's supporters at the Falmouth All-Age School on Monday, Stewart's car tyres were slashed and the meeting stoned by unknown persons.
At another meeting on Wednesday, his supporters were most vocal, demanding, "No Stewart, no vote." One supporter went as far as to say, "If no 'Bull Bull', mek wi give de Labour man then."
Mr. Stewart said that he is willing to serve the people despite last year's rejection. Pointing to the crowd at the meeting, he said they were his reason for challenging for the Council seat. He admitted that moving from an MP to Councillor was a demotion, but noted that while some people were not willing to serve if they are not at the top, he is willing to serve the people at whatever status.
A source told The Gleaner that of the approximately 25 constituency executives, only one was in support of Mr. Stewart.
