LETTER OF THE DAY: Telephone transmitters
published: Saturday | January 25, 2003
THE EDITOR, Sir: OUR ENVIRONMENT is constantly changing. It is changing under the influence of nature and it is also changing under the influence of several man-made creations. One such is the telephone transmitter. Over the past year, there has been a proliferation of these across our country.
There are two schools of thought concerning them. One school says, they emit radiation in strengths strong enough to cause cancer. The other denies that this is so. Since there seems to be insufficient evidence to convince the ordinary layman, then I would like to suggest that the government ought to make some definitive statement concerning these transmitters.
To us the ordinary citizen, we do not want these structures erected on our school compounds, ten feet away from our dwelling houses, beside our recreation centres, or in our residential communities. We do not want to be exposed to probable cancer-causing radiation, and above everything else, we do not want our children to be so exposed.
To neglect or reject the concerns of the people, could result in hardships of a cancerous nature, which this country with its multiplicity of problems can do without. The government must now make a statement, saying where these transmitters can and cannot be installed, as well as whether they are potentially harmful to our nation's health.
