Windies reserves shine
published: Saturday | January 25, 2003

POWELLST.JOHN'S, Antigua, CMC:
STANDBY PLAYERS Devon Smith and Darren Powell were standouts as a Ridley Jacobs XI won by three wickets in the day/night limited-overs practice match for the West Indies World Cup squad at the Stanford Cricket Ground here Thursday night.

Batting first, Carl Hooper's XI struggled to 159 all out off 46.1 overs, and Jacob's side -- propelled by Smith's half century -- snatched victory at 161 for seven off 34.3 overs.

Powell grabbed three for 45, but could not prevent defeat for Hooper's XI.

Hooper, in his first game since knee surgery last month, top-scored for his team with 38, while Wavell Hinds smashed 37 as Hooper's side stuttered beyond the 150-mark.

Other key batsmen Chris Gayle (5) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (14) had only brief knocks.

Bowling for Hooper's XI, pacers Vasbert Drakes (2-19) and Jermaine Lawson (2-25), and left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds (2-29) were the most successful.

Smith then belted 54 off 87 balls to steer the Jacob's XI to victory.

Ricardo Powell (19) was the next highest scorer, while Brian Lara made 17 and Ramnaresh Sarwan failed to score, as Darren Powell followed a moderate first spell with testing second spell.
