JAMAICA'S OVERSEAS-based athletes Michael "Breezy" Tomlin and Korene Hinds won the male and female titles at Sunday's 21st staging of the High Mountain 10K road race held in Williamsfield, Manchester.
Tomlin, the pre-race favourite, proved too hot for his rivals. He led from the start and raced to victory in 31:57.0, just seconds outside of the record.
G.C. Foster College's Omar Wiggan took second in 33:27.0 ahead of Phillip Edwards of the Jamaica Defence Force, who crossed the finish line in 33:35.
Meanwhile, Hinds, who won a silver medal at last year's Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in El Salvador raced to a record 36:42, leaving defending champion Rebeccah Wassner of the United States and teenager Tamika Thomas behind.
The New York-based Wassner was timed at 38:36.0 for second while 16-year-old Thomas, who won the 2002 Jamdammers Grand Prix Series, placed third in 40:31.0.
Both winners walked away with $15,000 sponsored by JPS and a trophy while the second and third place finishers received $10,000 and $9,000 respectively.
In the 5KUnder-16 event, Glengoffe's Andre Drummond crossed the line first in 15:45 ahead of Marshall Williams of Alston (16:13) and Balaclava's Christopher Robinson (16:14).
Meanwhile, Edwin Allen's Jodi-Ann Richards (17:46) emerged as the female champion, beating teammate Jessica McLeod (18:28) and Sherika Dyer of Vere (18:45).
Drummond and Richards won L.O. Minott scholarships worth $7,500 each in honour of the founder of Jamaica Standard Products, as well as computer scholarships valued at 10,800 each from Island Heart Institute of Business and Technology.
