Classes resume at Melrose
published: Thursday | January 30, 2003

CLASSES RESUMED at the Melrose Primary and Junior High School yesterday, but the teacher who was threatened by a student and his relatives has yet to return.

Mrs. Jennifer Lee, the school's principal, told The Gleaner the teacher has expressed his concern regarding possible reprisals by the relatives of the student with whom he was involved in a fight, in the event the boy is expelled after meeting with the school board.

"He called in to say he still was hesitant to come," said Mrs. Lee.

The boy, she indicated, is to meet with the board on February 3, at which time a decision will be made on his future at the school.

On Tuesday, a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting was held at the school after teachers took part in a sit-in protest against the lack of security on the compound the previous day. The protest was in the wake of the fight, which led to the threat on the teacher's life.

At the meeting, a six-point plan was put forward to increase security at the school.
