Portland gears for ship rush
published: Thursday | January 30, 2003

AS THE Port Authority of Jamaica steps up its efforts to reposition Port Antonio as a major cruise ship and mega-yachting destination in Portland, a number of cruise vessels are scheduled to call at the Ken Wright Pier in the town during this year.

William Tatham, director of cruise shipping at the Port Authority of Jamaica said that Fred Olsen Cruises in the United Kingdom and Raddison Cruises in the United States were among the cruise line companies expected to visit Port Antonio this year.

He said discussions were also being held with several other cruise liners that might have an interest in visiting the Portland capital. Additionally, he divulged plans to invite executives and captains of other companies to visit the port.

The Ken Wright Pier, which is a part of the recently constructed Port Antonio Marina, has been refurbished and equipped with additional facilities to enhance its appeal as a cruise ship destination.

Noting that the Port Authority was working assiduously to revive cruise shipping and develop mega-yachting in Port Antonio, Mr. Tatham said the operation of the marina's yachting facilities was currently being tendered to the public.
