THE VALLEY, Anguilla, CMC:
OMARI BANKS and Ian Tittle frustrated Jamaica with a century sixth-wicket stand for the Leeward Islands on the second day of their first round Carib Beer 2003 Cricket Series match at the Ronald Webster Park yesterday.
Banks (75) and Tittle (68) struck resistant half centuries to propel the Leeward Islands to 357 all out, and Jamaica reached 152 for three in reply at stumps - 205 behind - with David Bernard not out on 47 and Roberts Samuels on 11.
Jamaica lost openers Leon Garrick (58) and Brenton Parchment (12) and Donovan Pagon (11) also fell before the close.
Garrick and Parchment started positively, but with the score on 23, Parchment was drawn into a loose drive off pacer Adam Sanford and edged to wicketkeeper Joel Simmonds.
The promising Pagon departed to a smartly taken bat/pad catch to Tittle against off-spinner Banks as the Jamaicans dipped to 70 for two.
Just 17 runs later, Garrick, who reached his 50 in 109 minutes off 92 balls, with seven sweetly-timed boundaries, fell to Kerry Jeremy in the medium pacer's second spell.
But Samuels, in a patient 128-minute vigil and the more adventurous Bernard, who struck seven boundaries off 93 balls, saw the visitors to the close without further worries.
Earlier, the Leewards resumed from their overnight position of 235 for five, facing the Jamaicans, who began with left-arm spinner Ryan Cunningham and pacer Franklyn Rose, celebrating his 31st birthday.
Samuels took the new ball after six overs in the morning in a bid to remove overnight batsmen Tittle and Banks.
They both batted doggedly against Jamaica's pace combination of Rose and Powell, and survived some anxious moments - playing and missing on a few occasions.
Banks and Tittle added 102 runs for the sixth wicket, extending their overnight stand of 36.
Tittle reached his 50 by on-driving Powell to the mid-wicket boundary and Banks quickly followed in achieving his half-century by lofting off-spinner Nehemiah Perry over long-on for six.
The pair brought up the 300 but one run later, Bernard broke the partnership when he induced an attempted drive from Tittle which found the edge for wicketkeeper Keith Hibbert to execute a spectacular one-handed catch, diving a long way low to his left.
The Leewards then lost a further two wickets in the first session, extended by an earlier start by half an hour to make up for lost time on the opening day.
Wicketkeeper Simmonds made only one before he gave Garrick a simple low catch at short mid-wicket, as the batsman went across the line of a full length delivery from Bernard.
Banks soon lapsed in concentration just before lunch and attempted to repeat a lofted on-drive off the experienced Perry, for Powell to take a well judged catch running to his left.
The Leewards went to lunch at 328 for eight and extended their innings 40 minutes into the post-lunch session when Rose removed Jeremy (15) and Sanford (0), leaving debutante Carl Simon 18 not out.
Bernard was the most successful bowler with four for 101, while spinner Ryan Cunningham finished with three for 64 and Rose, two for 42.
