Patois in the courts
published: Monday | February 3, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS with interest that I read Mr Samuel A. Fitz-Henley's letter regarding Patois in the courts.

I am the PR person for The Jamaican American Association in Central Florida and on several occasions our organisation has been called upon to attend depositions for Jamaican clients. Yes, whether we want to accept it or not, there is a problem and some Jamaicans are at a disadvantage if accused and do not have competent interpretation at their deposition.

There are agencies in America which charge law firms handsome fees if they can find an interpreter when the need arises. It is time some creative Jamaican business person think of a way that he or she can make a connecting link to the courts to provide the service of helping disadvantaged Jamaicans in American courts.

I am etc.,
