THERE WERE a number of outstanding performances at the Youngster Goldsmith Hurdles and Field events meet at Kingston College over the weekend as athletes tuned up for the upcoming Boys and Girls Athletics Championships which is scheduled for the first week of April.
Leading the way were double champions Nadina Marsh of St. Jago and Latoya Greaves of Queen's.
Greaves, the Under 17 CAC junior champion, who has been in excellent form this season, won the Class 2 100 metres hurdles event. She had a keen battle with St. Jago's Kashain Page throughout before winning in 14.0 seconds. Page finished second in 14.2 with Immaculate's Monique Morgan in 14.5.
The Queen's student also won the long jump. After trailing in fifth position, Greaves produced a great effort on her final attempt to snatch gold with a leap of 5.73m.
St. Jago's Marsh and her main rival Keisha Brown of Vere Technical had a terrific battle in the Class 1 100m hurdles and both hit the finish line together with Marsh getting the nod of the finishing judges to win in 14.0 seconds, the same time credited to Brown. In the long jump Marsh picked up her second victory as she won with 5.66m, Brown once again finishing second with 5.54m.
In the Class 3 80m hurdles, 2001 Class 4 champion Tiane Burke of St. Andrew High and 2002 Class 4 champion Natasha Ruddock of St. Jago High were also involved in a keen battle before Burke (11.8) found something extra in the end to win ahead of her rival in 12.0 with Immaculate's Kimberly Laing finishing third also in 12.0.
Alpha's Peaches Roach continued her winning form in the Class 1 high jump. Roach who competed for Jamaica at last year's World Junior Championships won with 1.78m with the St. Jago pair, Michelle Williamson 1.70m and Kadian Campbell 1.65m, taking silver and bronze.
Annakaye Campbell of St. Andrew High took the girls Class 2 equivalent with 1.65m with Queen's Rosemarie Buckham (1.60m) taking silver and Sakina Beaumont of St. Andrew High taking the bronze with 1.60m. Nickoda Waugh and Adecelia Nembhard of St. Andrew High took the Class 3 and 4 events with 1.60 and 1.50m respectively.
In the female Invitational 100m World Junior relay gold medallist, Kerron Stewart of St. Jago High won in 11.7 ahead of Queen's Samantha Henry in 11.9 with third going to St. Jago Sudian Davis in 12.3.
Pete Smith of Kingston College gave his supporters a lot to cheer about in the Class 1 boys 110m hurdles. In a thrilling battle with Calabar's Sheldon Leith, Smith was adjudged the winner in the final strides in 14.3 seconds with Leith getting second in 14.4. Smith's team-mate Dorain Coley was third in 14.7.
Carifta under 17 double champion, Matthew Palmer of Wolmer's won the Class 2 110m hurdles in 14.4 with Calabar's Stephen McLean getting second in 14.7 just ahead of team-mate Andre Gray in 14.8.
It was one-two for Kingston College in the Class 1 high jump as Carlos Mattis (2.00m) won ahead of Dorain Coley (1.95m)
In Class 2 Tarik Edwards of Wolmer's took the gold ahead of Kingston College Alain Bailey with both credited with the same height of 1.90m.
In Class 3 Kingston College Omari Dokie (1.85m) won ahead of Wolmer's John Reid (1.82m with the bronze going to Andrew Riley of Calabar with 1.70m.
Following his record-breaking performance at St. Elizabeth Technical last weekend, St. Jago's Ricardo Page continued his winning ways in the Class 1 discus as he threw 51.78m to defeat Kingston College's Kimani Kirton 49.34m.
In Class 2 discus, Okeafe McDermott of Jamaica College captured the event with 34.70m with the Kingston College pair of Roger Chin 33.32m and Orlando Beckford 33.19.
Following injury late last season, St. George's College Tesfa Latty returned in fine style by winning the Invitational men's 100m in 10.7.
