WESTERN BUREAU:
RESIDENTS HAVE again appealed for urgent action to deal with the malfunctioning sewage plant at the Tryall Housing Scheme, Sandy Bay, Hanover.
"I am appealing to the authorities to remedy the sewage plant. Waste matter is overflowing into the sea where people bathe. It is a health hazard to the citizens. It gives off obnoxious scent and harbours mosquitoes. The people need to live comfortably," said Member of Parliament for Eastern Hanover, Barrington Gray.
"I have brought the matter to the Minister's attention over a year now and nothing has been done about it," he charged.
Gray told The Gleaner that the sewerage system not only affects the scheme but the entire Sandy Bay community. He stated that some areas are two feet above sea level and in some areas it is below sea level.
"No matter what is done to the sewage plant, the raw sewage that overflows into the sea is destroying the coral reef. We have to be strong to make recommendations that a central sewage system be in place to absorb all the solid waste that comes out of the plant. This is affecting the lives and health of the residents around" Gray warned.
"Everything in the beach just across the housing scheme is green because raw sewage is going in the sea. At the same time children are bathing in the water. This is dangerous to health and can cause outbreak of diseases."
Doug Lee, who lives in the Tryall Housing Scheme, told The Gleaner that people have been facing the problem for some time now. Several meetings have taken place between the NHDC and the Tryall Neighbourhood Watch but nothing has been done about it and the problem continues unabated.
