Stand up against child abuse
published: Wednesday | February 5, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ with interest the letter regarding the establishment of the Child Development Agency as one step in the prevention of child abuse. Living in the United States, I see the impact of child abuse on our children and families.

I agree that early exposure to child abuse often results in negative behaviour later in life. Congratulations to my Jamaican neighbours for focusing public attention on such an important issue.

In America we unfortunately too often place responsibility for issues such as child abuse in the hands of government. Please remember that child abuse, like many other social ills, is the responsibility of entire communities, not just government alone. It takes an entire community to stand up against plagues like child abuse. Nothing is more important than giving children the opportunity to succeed by showing them the light of true love and respect.

I am, etc.,
