'Y' Speedos retain Dalhouse trophy
published: Wednesday | February 5, 2003

WHEN THE shouting died down at the end of the final session of the 'Y' Speedos' Karl Dalhouse International Memorial swim meet on Sunday, 25 records were broken and with the host team 'Y' Speedos Swim Club on top.

Despite a strong challenge from the Tornadoes Swim Club, 'Y' Speedos amassed a total of 1,511.5 points to Tornadoes' 1,352.5.

In third place was the Stingray team from Cayman with 365.5 points.

Over the three days of the meet a total of 25 records were broken. They included two National Age Group records and two All-comers Age Group records (two of these having been over 20 years old) as well as 21 meet records.

Tornadoes Swim Club were responsible for 12 meet records, and 'Y' Speedos two National Age Group, two All-comers Age group and six meet records.Blue Seals, Sithoc of Curacao and Stingrays broke one meet record each.

Competition was keen and there were some close races with some good swimming by national representatives Todd Johnson of 'Y' Speedos and Jevon Atkinson along with his teammates Brad Hamilton and Rene Wright of Tornadoes. The three Tornadoes swimmers were among the record breakers with more than one each.

Jevon Atkinson broke four, Brad Hamilton three and Rene Wright two records.

Eight & Under girl Raynae Hall of 'Y' Speedos broke the National Age Group, All-comers Age Group and meet 50m butterfly records in a time of 40.29 sec. The old time of 40.73 was set by R. Broven of Stingrays (Ja) in 1983.

The excitement of the medley relays at the end of the meet brought the crowd to its feet with some close finishes. Five meet records were broken, three by 'Y' Speedos and two by Tornadoes.

The overseas teams from Aruba, Cayman, Curacao and Panama gave the seven local teams tough competition and a taste of what is to come at the Carifta Games here this Easter.

The Karl Dalhouse meet also saw the inclusion of the Masters Swimmers (the 25s and over) competing for their own trophy - the Karl Dalhouse Masters' Trophy. Tornadoes Masters came out winners in this category with 148 points to second place 'Y' Speedos' 113, and third place Aruba Dolphins 12.

Close finishes were seen in the men's 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly between Speedos' Lynval Lowe and Tornadoes' Michael Lee; whilst two Tornadoes coaches, Jacky Walter and Syreta Daley, had a "photo finish" in their 50m butterfly. Encouragingly, the number of registered Masters swimmers has increasing and more will be seen of them in the water at the Walter Rodgers' Age Group Championships at the end of thius month.
