Boosting tourism
published: Thursday | February 6, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

TOURISM IS a private business in Jamaica and hotels need to do more in order to bring in more tourists and revenue. Jamaica is a popular tourist destination. Jamaica is always being referred to in TV shows and movies, and in a positive way. We need to capitalise on that.

Many hotels in Jamaica are deteriorating in both facilities and services. The emphasis (no matter how small the hotel) should be to always improve the property and service. The hoteliers need to form a co-op and pool their resources and increase overseas advertising. That is not the government's or taxpayer's responsibility.

The only responsibility the government has to is to improve the towns like Ocho Rios (a very ugly, dirty town) for a tourist destination. Ocho Rios needs great improvement, especially near the market and the clock. Ocho Rios needs a massive clean-up and paint-up campaign. Compared to other islands, we surely have some ugly towns to show the tourist. Anyone listening?

I am etc.,
