Disrespecting the teachers
published: Monday | February 10, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM deeply saddened by the plight of the country's teachers in trying to get an increase in their salary.

For many years Jamaica's Prime Minister and Ministers have been treating the teachers with disrespect. There shouldn't be a reason for JTA to be going around the bargaining table repeatedly for a mere 30 per cent increase when the Prime Minister and Ministers had their salary increase by more than 100 per cent without consulting with the people of this country.

Who are they to do as they like and neglect the educators who are trying their best to mould the lives of people's children?

Our teachers are recognised worldwide and it would be good to treat them with respect, so that we will not have a brain drain on this country.

The teachers of this country should remember that unity is strength and if they stand together, the Prime Minister and Ministers will have to listen to them and give them what they deserve, i.e. a better life and a better future.

Honourable Prime Minister, if you fail to deal with the teachers properly, then the education system of Jamaica will fail miserably and the future of the youths of tomorrow will stagnate.

I am etc.,

LEON CLAIR

(PRO) JTA
