'Teething trouble' pains Poise launch

THE POISE Agency launched the series 'Fashion of the Races' last Wednesday night at the Village Café in Liguanea, St. Andrew. The series actually began the previous week and is scheduled to culminate on August 2 of this year.

The organisers of the series revealed that it is intended to celebrate our strong 'cultural and ethnic ties'. The shows are slated to start at 9:00 p.m. each Wednesday at the Village Café, with the finale starting at 10:00 a.m. The finale is being touted as an informative session featuring displays on varying cultures.

At 9:30 p.m. there was no sign of a beginning. 10:00 p.m. ticked around with the same result, so too did 10:30 p.m. and even 11:00 p.m.

Poise manager Valentine Evans stated that the late start was due to inability to locate a microphone. Nonetheless, all could have been forgiven had the show been breathtaking or even lived up to its name.

The night's fashion was overall nothing to write home about and seemed to be geared towards two kinds of people. The first target group are those who wish to adamantly run with the pack and wear what everybody else is wearing. The second group are the lovers of breasts. Quite a few of the outfits seemed to scream that breasts are in (or rather, out), a fact which got the attention of many of the male patrons.

Additionally, the clothing did not quite live up to the titles that the segments, in this very short show, were given. The first segment was titled 'African wear', and the definition seemed to be more aimed at the models than the garments they wore. While some pieces fitted the description, others clearly did not.

To top this off, in a very ironic twist, the models had no poise, or that much attitude for that matter. For the most part, they attempted to redefine ideas of walking, not to mention sashaying.

On the positives however, Evans noted that he deliberately does not feature only stick thin models because he believes that not only the skinny are sexy. In an industry which desperately tries to promote the idea that food is a myth, it is an interesting attitude, which may well work for the local market.

The good thing is that the Poise Agency is just under a year old. As such, it is hoped that this is just teething trouble. Wednesday night's fashion was taken from Total Collection, Salon Innovation and Demontagnac Collections. Tomorrow, the focus will be on bikinis.
