Darker days of our history

THE EDITOR, Sir:
TODAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2003, and perhaps the day after will represent one of the darker days of our country's history. First of all, teachers are on strike whilst children's exams are pending.
I do not support the teachers strike, the salaries spoken of are salaries shared by many Jamaicans in this country, it is just that the teachers are bold enough and have enough handle to make their voices heard. However, I do understand and stand in support of the teachers in principle. Yes the economy is in a bad way, so we should understand and band our bellies and bear it but who relegated the economy to the condition it is in now? Isn't it the government with politicians benefiting from all sorts of deals and outrageous squandering of monies here and there. Little wonder why the economy is so overburdened, bordering on a crash, yet the 'mismanagers', are unwilling to band their bellies but expect others to.
Then, the gall of the MPs, after taking a whopping 103 per cent increase on an already tidy salary; salaries which could afford them assets in the multiplied millions, they are asking the ordinary citizens to understand their dilemma and take three per cent.
No Mr. Prime Minister never, only if you roll back your increases.
