MINISTER OF National Security, Dr. Peter Phillip, has stressed the importance for collaboration among all the relevant agencies to secure Jamaica's border.
"All agencies involved in providing access to our borders must be linked in a concerted effort to ensure that legitimate trade and international travel will not be compromised by the infiltration of organised criminal networks," Dr. Phillips stated in recent message to commemorate International Customs Day.
"Access to and use of our Customs service must be balanced by the fact that those who use the system cannot be allowed to tarnish the good name of our country," the message said. "We must continue to pursue a multi-agency approach that builds the collaboration that exists between the Security Forces and the Customs."
Turning to the role of Customs, Dr. Phillips noted that the Ministry of Security recognised its significance as an integral part of the network of institutions and systems to be further strengthened to ensure the safety and security of Jamaica's borders. "The role of Customs in the maintenance of effective border cannot be overstated," the message said, while citing the international obligations and regulations that Jamaica had to fulfil.
International Customs Day was observed on January 26, 2003 and Jamaica Customs spearheaded the local activities.
