Thumbs up for new surface
published: Tuesday | February 11, 2003

By Daraine Luton, Staff Reporter

THE REGGAE Boyz got their first chance to train on the new National Stadium playing surface last night ahead of tomorrow's friendly against the United States and all, including technical director Carl Brown, were very impressed.

"It is just great, just great that we have lived to see the day that we have a beautiful field at the National Stadium," said Brown who added that the even bounce will contribute to better first touches on the part of the players.

Ace defender Goodison told The Gleaner "it feels good". Top midfielder Theodore "Tappa" Whitmore and Ricardo "Bibi" Gardner of English Premier League club Bolton Wanderers said the surface was well done.

"It criss man," Whitmore said.

The technical director said the overseas players are used to excellent playing fields and this should work in the advantage of the Reggae Boyz.

"The bulk of our squad is coming out of England where there are good surfaces," Brown said.

The technical director said Jamaica had a good chance of inflicting their first ever defeat on the Americans.

"The team is blending well as a unit and newcomer Damion Francis out of Wimbledon looks very comfortable among the players. I just hope that he gets going and plays well and serves us for a long time," Brown said.
