Sitting councillor selected to contest Lacovia division
published: Wednesday | February 12, 2003

By Ryan Dyer, Freelance Writer

BLACK RIVER, St Elizabeth:

SITING JAMAICA Labour Party (JLP) Councillor for the Lacovia division, Broderick Wright, was returned by the delegates to represent the party in the upcoming Local Government elections at the Lacovia High School on Sunday.

Of the 49 delegates who participated in the selection, 24 voted for Councillor Wright, 15 voted for former JLP councillor, Winston Lewis and 11 voted for Radcliffe Jameison.

The selection was presided over by Member of Parliament for East Hanover, Barrington Grey, who urged the delegates and party supporters to make the best of the opportunity and choose the aspirant of their choice in a peaceful way. He also underscored the need for the JLP to retain the Lacovia division in the election.

The meeting, which was for the most part quiet, witnessed some heated exchanges between some of the party's supporters and delegates defending the candidate of their choice.

Speaking with The Gleaner after his selection, Councillor Wright said he was very confident from day one, because he has done a great deal of work in the division over the years. He noted that even though he sits on the opposition side of the St. Elizabeth Parish Council, he has been able to successfully lobby for light, water and roads for most of the communities in the division.

"I know what I had done for the residents, so there was no worry on my part coming into this selection. However, I want to assure them that I intend to go back to the Council to bat for the completion of all the projects that was started in this division", said Councillor Wright.

Both Mr. Lewis and Jameison vowed to support Councillor Wright. They also accepted the results as the will of the people.
