By Tanya Batson, Staff ReporterTHE ONLY food which seems to inspire more trepidation than pork is crab. Due to their fears about the crab's diet (and the fact that it is not the tastiest looking animal), many people shun crab meat. Well, I for one say to that 'more for us then!'
It was with this philosophy firmly in mind that the lure of 'crab night' at The Sea Grill was heard and answered. The restaurant, located at 7 Grosvenor Terrace, has the crab night three nights for the week, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. They offer all you can eat crab and garlic bread to boot. Resistance if futile.
As we picked a Friday night to go, it meant finding an intrepid way to avoid the unholy traffic which is constantly in the Constant Spring area. Regardless of how free-flowing the traffic in the rest of Kingston may be, it is a sure bet that there will be some amount of back-up once you come near to Constant Spring - and there was.
Having managed to skirt this snarl, however, we make our way to the road in question. However, as we drove past Grosvenor Galleries and saw only what looked like homes, I began to wonder if we had the correct address. The worry increased when we found number seven and it too looked like a residence.
Not to be turned away from the prospect of 'all you can eat' crab, we turned into the yard with the single caution to 'listen out for the dog', just in case we were in somebody's home. We drove to the back of the yard in question and tables set out on the lawn suggested that we had found what we were looking for. It seemed however, that we were the first to get there. No matter though, as that simply meant that there was more food.
The open air atmosphere, with kerosene lamps on the tables, is a rather nice effect. Additionally, crab eating is not the kind of event for which you want great lighting. The only aspect which they need to improve is the music, which needs more of a surround sound effect.
Crab night at the Sea Grill as yet does not seem to have drawn a large crowd, if our night was anything to go by. However, the varying kinds of crab that they served were delicious. The featured part of the crab are the backs, which are served in Chinese, spicy, curry and garlic flavours. The Chinese crab was particularly delicious.
The Sea Grill also offers free conch soup as a part of their nightly charge. At a cost of less than $500.00 per person, this is a great deal. The rest of the menu is also reasonably priced.
Those who do not want to indulge in the crabs will find that the menu also offers barbecued or grilled chicken, baby back ribs, lobster and shrimp (curried, garlic of peppered).
To top this off, one is given a bowl of lime water to rinse the fingers in after the feast of crab. After wantonly wallowing in the crab up to our elbows, the lime water was very welcome.
