TODAY'S opening day of the National Hurdles and Fields events championships at Kingston College could be highlighted by the battle between 'homeboy' Wasim Walker and Jason Binns of Jamaica College in the pole vault. Events begin at 9 a.m.
Walker registered a new mark of 4.05 metres at the Youngster Goldsmith Hurdles and Field events meet, after his Jamaica College rival Jason Binns had earlier recorded a personal best of 3.80m.
However, Walker, who is the VMBS Boys defending champion will have it much more difficult this time around as Javon Savage of Bridgeport, who took silver at champs last year is also competing.
Pole vault will not be the only event for the day. In fact, Kimani Kirton, who captained the male national team in the World Junior Championships last year will be in the shot put circle. He is undefeated this season, already recording marks of 18.02m and 17.56m. Kirton, who also throws the discus should find the going tough as he will be up against St. Jago's Ricardo Page and his KC teammate Fabian Morgan.
Wolmer's Monique Edwards and Holmwood's Peta-Gaye Beckford could clash in the Class 1 girls discus. Edwards won at the Youngster Goldsmith meet while Beckford was on top at the opening Swizzzle/JC invitational.
The hurdles and jumping events will be staged at G.C. Foster College on March 8.
