Juniors in spotlight at Matchplay
published: Saturday | February 15, 2003

OF THE 50 players who teed off last Saturday with hopes of being named one of the 2003 Jamaica Matchplay champions, only 14 remain to battle through to today's third round at the Constant Spring Golf Club.

Matchplay is based on an individual's performance on each hole and a match is won or lost depending on the amount of holes won by a competitor over his opponent. This is the first renewal of the event by the Jamaica Golf Association since 1996.

The main story so far revolves around junior competitors.

National team members Isabelle Marley, who defeated her mother and former national representative Leiza Blakeley on the 17th hole to advance to the third round of the Championship, and Tiffany Terrier who also clinched victory on the 17th hole over Anne Telling have advanced to tomorrow's Championship trophy final.

The survivors from the men's Championship flight are Cleo Taylor, Fred Sutherland, Radcliffe Knibbs and Bill Telling.

Taylor defeated Sean Morris on the 17th hole of their game, while Sutherland went six up on Rory Jardine with four holes remaining.

Constant Spring's chairman, Knibbs, defeated Mark Newnham on the 12th hole and Telling received a walkover into the third round when his opponent failed to show. Telling will now play Taylor in the third round, while Sutherland will be Knibbs' opponent.

The third round must be completed today with the finals scheduled for tomorrow.

The men in the Championship Flight will play 36 holes while all other flights and the ladies championship will be over 18 holes.
