Another tax!

The Editor Sir,
I was appalled to read in the Gleaner yesterday (Saturday February 15, 2003) about an airport levy which travellers departing the island will now have to pay. Call me ignorant, uneducated, unread and fool-fool, but I recall sometime ago the departure tax was increased and included in the price quoted for airline tickets. Now they are trying to trick me and change the word, tax my pocket again and call it 'airport levy.'
It is getting increasingly difficult to survive in Jamaica. Sometimes a poor man gets a lucky break to travel and can hardly find the fare for the ticket, needless to say, at times not even a minimum US$20 to spend, and now this! It maybe that airport improvement fees are well established by airports around the world. It may also be too late to cry over spilt milk. While Sangster's airport expansion plans are ready, it is absolutely ludicrous and disgusting to start charging fees for Norman Manley Airport and expansion plans are far from ready. Absolutely, disgustingly, ludicrous!
