THE EDITOR, Sir;
President Bush and company, Messrs. Rumsfeld and Powell are hell bent on plunging the world into catastrophic conflict.
They, and their supporters, continue to remind the world that they so bravely liberated France in WWII and rescued Germany and the world from Adolph Hitler. Yes indeed, and the world is grateful.
Mr. Rumsfeld has called France and Germany "Old Europe" because they will not support a U.S.-led call to "disarm" Saddam Hussein.
Kindly step back some 200 plus years gentlemen, to May, 1776. The Declaration of Independence has not even been drafted. An infant America fighting for her independence and suffering devastating losses at the hands of the British, were rescued in part by a pledge of arms and munitions to the tune of one million dollars by King Louis XVI of France. Spain also pledges support and viable trade links are established with the Dutch.
In July 1777, a French aristocrat, the Marquis de Lafayette arrives in America and volunteers to serve without pay. He is appointed a Major General in the Continental Army and goes on to become one of George Washington's most trusted aides.
President Bush would do better to address the issues still existing in America today. Lest he forget, some of these are; unemployment, a failing economy, and racism, supported by groups such as the KKK and the Neo Nazis.
Be reminded, gentlemen, that were it not for the support of some of the so-called "Old Europe", the United States might not be on a map today!
I am, etc.
