Winter storms freeze Air J's flights to US
published: Tuesday | February 18, 2003

SEVERAL AIR Jamaica flights were grounded at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston yesterday, after deadly storms on the United States' east coast caused several cancellations.

The national airline said it was forced to delay five of its flights because of the deadly winter storms affecting that region.

The flights affected were JM001 and JM017 to New York; JM019 to Newark; JM041 to Baltimore; JM045 to Philadelphia and JM049 to Boston, displacing hundreds of passengers, Air Jamaica's communications executive, Sandrea Falconer, said. She said that regular flights, with the exception of the Boston flight, will resume today starting at 2:00 a.m.

Meanwhile, Air Jamaica said that it was monitoring the situation and will keep passengers informed as conditions improve.

Up to yesterday in New York, high winds and sleet had intensified frigid conditions and blizzard warnings had been issued after 35 miles per hour winds and heavy blowing snow reduced visibility to almost zero.

More than a foot of snow was also expected in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Connecticut while in Boston winds had reached up to 60 miles per hour. Baltimore-Washington International Airport had also been closed since Sunday as the area grappled with 25 inches of snow, the sixth largest storm in the region's history.
