CAMPERDOWN'S Class 1 sprint quartet confirmed their billing as the best high school boys relay team in the island when they ran away with the Jamalco-sponsored 4x100m Championship title at yesterday's prestigious Gibson Relays at the National Stadium.
Before a moderate crowd Derion Campbell, Orion Nicely, Kevin Stewart and Winston Hutton produced silky smooth baton changes to win in 40.98 seconds. Vere Technical were second in 41.54 and St. George's College, third in 41.64. William Knibb High with World Junior Championships 200m gold medalist Usain Bolt running the third leg were fourth.
The Class 1 girls 4x100m went to defending champions Holmwood Technical who established a long lead on the third leg then held off a strong challenge in the final stages from a Simone Facey-led Vere Technical quartet. The winners clocked an impressive 46.18, with Vere just behind in 46.32. Holmwood also won the Class 2 4x100m in 46.37, Edwin Allen topped Class 3 in 47.40 and hot favourites St. Andrew High took Class 4 in 49.20.
University of Technology won the sprint relay for men's institution while G.C. Foster took the women's event. Winning times were not available at press time. Holmwood Technical's Boys and Edwin Allen's girls also ran away with the 4x800m championship events.
In the Class 2 boys 4x100m, Calabar just held on in 43.30 to beat a fast-finishing St. George's (43.31). St. Jago were third.
Calabar completed a quick double minutes later when they took the Class 4 boys sprint relay.
In individual events 2002 World Junior Championships bronze medalist Germaine Mason equalled the high jump meet record when he cleared 2.20m. The record was established by Dennis Fearon in 1995.
The women's high jump went to Peaches Roach of Alpha with a leap of 1.83m. She defeated Karen Beautle 1.80m and Holmwood's Shaunette Davidson, 1.75m.
Sheldon Leith of Calabar easily won the 110m hurdles open clocking 14.75 to beat Herbert Morrison's Lorne Campbell, 15.05, and Rudolph Lowe (Calabar) 15.29.
