The two gas turbines at Bogue that were brought on line last year, and which now provide an additional 80 megawatts of power to the national grid.THE JAMAICA Public Service Company (JPSCo) is now in the final phases of construction on its 120-megawatt combined cycle generating plant, which will put the company in a better position to "provide consistent electricity supply to customers", the monopoly power house said this week.
"As part of the winding down process, the contractors on the project have begun to scale down their workforce to match the work left to be done," said a statement from JPSCo.
The company has already commissioned into service the first phase of the combined cycle plant at Bogue, Montego Bay, with the installation of two gas turbine generating units, with total capacity of 80 megawatts. The third 40-megawatt unit will be brought on line later this year.
"The combined cycle plant will be one of the most efficient among JPSCo's generating fleet," the company said. "It will utilise the heat from the two gas turbines to create steam for generating the additional 40 megawatts of electricity."
This, the company added, will result in reduced fuel costs to JPSCo, and ultimately, to customers.
