Not by tourism alone
published: Sunday | March 2, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

'TOURISM OUR only chance' - Stewart urges Government to use resources effectively.

I disagree with you, Mr. Stewart. We need to put our resources in technology and manufacturing and farming. We cannot focus on tourism as our major source of income.

Besides, it seems to me that only the all-inclusive hotels seem to benefit from the tourists that come to the island.

I cannot see how the vendors in Ocho Rios, who depend on tourist dollars, survive because one hardly sees any tourists at these venues.

Tourists are locked away inside the hotels. Their activities are controlled and they are, in my opinion, discouraged from venturing out.

Only when the cruise ships come in you may see a good number of tourists on the street and they are taken to specific merchants.

Let those who benefit from tourism put back money in the development of the tourism industry and let the Goverment use its funds to develop industries that teach skills, bring in real income and benefit the ENTIRE island.

I am, etc,
