Litter on buses
published: Sunday | March 2, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WISH TO recommend that the Road Traffic Regulations be amended to include a provision requiring all public transport vehicles, including taxis and the Jamaica Urban Transport Company (JUTC) fleet, to provide a garbage receptacle (designs to vary depending on the vehicle) to be situated at the exit doors of all buses, and at a suitable location in taxis, to enable passengers to dispose of garbage before leaving the vehicle.

A publicity campaign could then be launched to encourage passengers to use it and discourage them from throwing same out of the windows. Failure to have such a receptacle installed would render the driver liable to prosecution. I intend to forward this recommendation to the relevant authorities.

I am, etc.,

HOWARD HAMILTON, Q.C.

Public Defender
