Disappointing Windies

THE EDITOR, Sir:
ONCE AGAIN, the West Indies cricket team has disappointed. I think that what is lacking in the Windies side of this era is that they do not have the drive that the West Indies team of a bygone era had. In the days when George Headley, Gary Sobers, and subsequently Viv Richards, played the game, there were social and political tensions being played out on the cricket field.
It was more than just a game to the West Indies throughout the colonial and post-colonial era. The social and political dynamics throughout that period instilled in the West Indies teams of those eras the drive to succeed. Hence, the West Indies flourished in cricket for several years and became the best in the world. Today, the West Indies team have seemingly lost that deep-seated drive to win the game no matter what odds they face.
Talent alone will not sustain a cricket team. No matter how talented the players on the current West Indies cricket team are, if these players do not possess the drive to win the game for more than just the sake of winning, this losing cycle will continue.
