$95m for consultancy fees shocking

THE EDITOR, Sir:
WITH THE world economies in turmoil, it is unfortunate and quite shocking to read that Jamaica has paid consultants $95 million for 'consultancy fees.' Forget about the status of the economies in other regions, and look solely at Jamaica's. Not a pretty picture. That $95 million could have been invested in the island's number one foreign exchange earner, tourism.
Jamaica still has tremendous potential to become a leader in this respect (once again). The island has vast, untapped resources to help earn even more foreign exchange. We seem to be making the same mistakes, in terms of good investments, at all times. We should capitalise on the advantages and resources of the people, and the island itself, so more jobs can be provided. The tourism capital is Montego Bay; there is also Ocho Rios and Negril as powerful foreign exchange earners. We also have tourism potential in the east and south of the island such as Port Antonio, Mandeville, and even Kingston.
Invest in a better crime stop plan within the concentrated sections. Invest in a better education plan so the younger generations can become progressive citizens in society. Invest in improving Jamaica's infrastructure.
