THE EDITOR, Sir:
MR SEAGA'S reaction to Omar Davies' recent statements underscores the need for the JLP to find a new leader. The promise to bring down the government has shifted the public's concern about the Finance Minister's handling of the economy to fears of the effects of the actions of a vintage Eddie Seaga on the economy and the country as a whole.
The Opposition Leader's statement brings shivers to my spine because it conjures up memories of the late 1970s and 1980. One is forced to recall the days when roadblocks and the burning of tyres were introduced as the chief means by which the public register its disagreement with the government. Perhaps if those words came from a different leader within the JLP, the nation would not have been engulfed with such apprehension and fear.
The PNP is becoming increasingly arrogant because the party realises that as long as Mr. Seaga remains the leader of the JLP the public will see the PNP as the lesser of the two evils. Furthermore, Mr. Seaga has very little credibility to confront the government about corruption.
If Mr. Seaga really wants to bring down the government, he could commit the greatest act of non-violence and passive resistance since Gandhi, by stepping down as leader of the JLP. Please Mr. Seaga, do it for the sake of the country, generations will call you blessed!
