PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC:

TEST PACER Darren Powell and off-spinner Gareth Breese snared three wickets each for reigning Cup champions Jamaica to stall Trinidad and Tobago's batting on the opening day of their sixth-round Carib Beer 2003 Cricket Series match at the Queen's Park Oval yesterday.

Trinidad and Tobago were 214 for nine when stumps were drawn at the fall of Marlon Black's wicket, leaving Dave Mohammed not out on 28.

Powell captured three for 33 off 14 overs and Breese picked up three for 45 off 26 overs and effected regular trips to the pavilion for the home side's batsmen.

Jamaica's bowling attack stifled Trinidad and Tobago's batting after the home side elected to bat and only posted 57 runs in the first session while losing opener Andy Jackson and number three batsman Dwayne Bravo.

With only two runs on the board, pacer Powell trapped Jackson leg before wicket without scoring as the attacking left-hander played no shot.

Bravo struck 22 and departed shortly before the lunch break when he attempted to turn Breese to the on-side and gave an easy catch - off the leading edge - to Brenton Parchment at short mid-wicket.

Captain Daren Ganga battled for 15 before he was given out caught behind by Keith Hibbert off Breese at 66 for three, before pacers Powell and Jerome Taylor struck two quick blows to further set back Trinidad and Tobago before tea.

Jan, who struck 40 with four boundaries, was caught by wicket-keeper Hibbert down the leg side as Trinidad and Tobago dipped to 115 for four, and without addition to the score, Hibbert executed a fine diving low catch, one-handed when the little left-hander Zaheer Ali (27) edged 18-year-old Taylor (1-18).

Lincoln Roberts (14) and Lendl Simmons (36) added 39 for the sixth wicket early in the final session before Roberts was run out, failing to beat a throw - from Leon Garrick at mid-wicket - to wicket-keeper Hibbert.

Simmons, returning to the side as wicket-keeper/batsman after being dropped for the fifth-round game in Barbados last week, struck three fours and slammed off-spinner Nehemiah Perry for six over long-on before he edged Breese to Robert Samuels at 1st slip.

Ravi Rampaul (3) was another run-out victim, beaten by David Bernard's throw from mid-wicket to Hibbert at 178 for eight, and Powell trapped Black (12) leg before wicket with day's last ball.

Mohammed, acquitted of a rape charge in Grenada this week, will resume batting with Theodore Modeste when play starts Saturday morning.

Jamaica, the defending Cup champions, named Maurice Kepple to replace Mario Ventura in the only change from their fifth round team, while Trinidad and Tobago made three changes, bringing in Simmons, Mohammed, and Theodore Modeste, for Navin Chan, Mukesh Persad, and Dinanath Ramnarine.

Ramnarine has been excused from the game at his request because his mother is very ill.

Teams:

Jamaica - Robert Samuels (captain) Leon Garrick, Brenton Parchment, David Bernard, Keith Hibbert, Maurice Kepple, Gareth Breese, Nehemiah Perry, Darren Powell, Ryan Cunningham, Jerome Taylor.

Trinidad & Tobago - Daren Ganga (captain), Imran Jan, Andy Jackson, Dwayne Bravo, Zaheer Ali, Lincoln Roberts, Lendl Simmons, Ravi Rampaul, Dave Mohammed, Marlon Black, Theodore Modeste.
