Amnesty meetings a wste of time
published: Friday | March 14, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WONDER just why the Government of Jamaica is paying such respect to Amnesty International. Why did three senior Government Ministers sit down to meet with a bunch of researchers? Worse, they (researchers) lack the capacity to look at any issue regarding government's objectively. Their remit is clearly understood and has political overtones underscored by the last visit of Pierre Sane.

As far as I am concerned Amnesty International is pretending that they are the police for the world and the only ones who care about human rights. What about the rights of the millions of people in Iraq who stand on the verge of being killed innocently?

Let me say that I support human rights like many persons in Jamaica and the world and I believe that every Government would like to have a perfect human rights record. Amnesty International could make a more meaningful contribution if they were to take a constructive approach to their research and not do the very thing they are accusing governments of doing.

I think the Government should stop meeting with them, because frankly, I think it is a waste of time.

I am, etc.,

ANNIE SPENCER
