More students receive scholarships from Dr Lloyd Cole Foundation
published: Friday | March 14, 2003

IN CONTINUING the mission of the Dr. Lloyd Cole Foundation 18 more poor promising students received scholarships worth $250,000 to further their education.

The successful students came from seven schools in the Corporate Area and rural Jamaica. They received their awards at a function held at the Medallion Hall Hotel recently.

The Dr. Lloyd Cole Foundation has to date, given 150 such scholarships with a further 20 or more students receiving assistance to further their education. The Foundation was established by Dr. Cole with personal funding since 1994.

In recognition of his services in especially education, culture and the humanities to Jamaica, the Caribbean and the wider global community, Professor, The Honourable Rex Nettleford, was honoured by the Foundation. In his absence a citation was read by the American Deputy Chief of Mission, His excellency Mr. Richard Smyth. The Hon. Barbara Gloudon accepted a plaque on behalf of Professor Nettleford, presented by the British High Commissioner, His Excellency Mr. Peter Mathers.

A breathtaking series of gymnastics by nine-year-old Shannay Gentles and seven-year-old Megan Simmonds, under the watchful eyes of their Japanese couch, Mr. Ichimsto, had the audience on their feet.

Under the chairmanship of Dr. Charles Thesiger, and following an outline of the Foundation's mission and objectives by Dr. Cole, goodwill and motivational messages were delivered by the British High Commissioner and the American Deputy Chief of Mission. Mrs. Gloudon received several standing ovations for a grand keynote address on personal development and nation-building through education.
