Pastoral Letter to President Bush
published: Tuesday | March 25, 2003

Devon Dick

Dear Brother Bush,

ON WEDNESDAY last, a few minutes before the war started, a commentator on Larry King Live on CNN said that you needed to go ahead with the war since there was going to be live 24-hour coverage and you should not waste media time. Happily, you did not waste time.

In Jamaica, there were 50 persons who demonstrated in front of the American Embassy and obviously, were wasting their time. Carnival draws a much larger crowd; Church crusades can fill stadium and political parties can 'cork' Half-Way Tree. The revellers, church people and politicians were not involved in that protest. The only time those people go in front of your embassy is to collect visas.

Furthermore, there was no need to write what some interpret as a threatening letter to the CARICOM leaders. Just remind them of the financial aid that you give them. Stop the farm work and the hotel programmes. Prevent them from visiting your hospitals and universities. Impose some more trade barriers and starve the exporters. Put out an advisory that Jamaica is a hostile place towards American interests and frighten away the tourists. Tell them you will freeze the remittances. Let them know that principle 'cyaan' eat.

However, you made one big mistake. You should have followed your mind and go to war alone and forget about a coalition. In the Bible, God told Gideon, who was preparing for a war, to get rid of some of the soldiers. Some of your 'friends' such as the Turks, are ungrateful and turned their backs on the US $6B bribe to allow your troops to enter Iraq via their territory. In addition, they are not listening to you and instead they want to enter Iraq. You cannot allow that and if they cannot hear, then they will have to feel. So forget about bribing and bullying others and go it alone. At the end of the war, just give the praise to God. Forget about world opinion and all these massive demonstrations. Remind them that you are not running a world democracy. After the victory, the opposition will be begging you oil. Just be like President Robert Mugabe and ignore world opinion.

Your place in history is assured if you create a new world powerful body. You have discredited the United Nations. Some in the European Union, especially 'old Europe', is not with you and you know that those who are not with you are against you. NATO will not give you unquestioned obedience. These bodies are anachronisms in this new dispensation. What you need to do is form a world body called 'Friends of America'.

By the way, Brother Bush, you need to weed out some of the 'dead wood' in your Cabinet because they are leading you astray. They told you to go to the UN but they did not discern that you could not get nine votes in the UN Security Council to approve a war. It is infra dig for you, the president of the greatest nation on the earth, to have to beg for sanction to go to war for the benefit of USA.

Furthermore, your advisors wasted your time and did not inform you that resolution 1441 did not authorise war. You cannot know everything. They should have told you that when 1441 said 'serious consequences', it is not the diplomatic language for war. The diplomatic language for war is 'by all means necessary'. They have made you look foolish in seeking permission for war and when you did not get it, you had to turn around and say that you did not need it. Just ignore UN resolutions like Iraq and Israel. You ignored the International Criminal Court because you do not want Americans to run the risk of being charged for war crimes and you also ignored the Geneva Convention in the treatment of POWs from Afghanistan so a nuh nutten if like Iraq and Israel you ignore the UN. You are a visionary leader establishing new rules including pre-emptive strike.

You are also a chosen one to destroy world terrorism. Just keep up the bombing on Afghanistan and Iraq.

I notice that people are asking if you have found any weapons of mass destruction as if they doubt there are those weapons. I believe that there are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and if they push you just show them the receipts!

You are a Christian and you must be congratulated for your honesty. Other presidents have engaged in regime change but it was clandestine, however you have declared your hand that disarmament was not your goal. O great democrat, your goal is for regime change by the bullet of a foreign regime. You deserve a Nobel Peace Prize.

Keep up the good war. Wrestle, fight and pray. I am praying for you. God Bless America.

Greet First Lady, Laura, the children and relatives who are not on the battlefield.

Your brother in Christ, Devon Dick.

PS: My ten-year-old nephew, David, is asking if you have weapons of mass destruction and he wonders if you would like the same treatment being meted out to Iraq.

The Rev Devon Dick is pastor of the Boulevard Baptist Church.
