THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS inconceivable, if not unfortunate, that our representatives in Parliament should ostensibly deny knowledge of the communiqué sent by the US Government "requesting" that we vote in a particular manner or not attend the UN's convening of a meeting discussing America's handling of the on-going war in Iraq!
This Government has constantly exhibited their scant regard for the intellect of the public and even more so, the sacrifice our forefathers made in the fight for our freedom.
Asking Jamaica to prostitute its right of sovereignty by doing what the US says, when it says so (with the unsaid 'or else') is an insult to the Jamaican people, not to be entertained by the recipients of that "invisible communiqué".
If the US sees fit to engage Iraq in war then do so; but at the same time respect the sovereign rights, opinions and decision of others.
My beef is not with the US, but with those who represent me. Notwithstanding the "financial leech-like" mentality we exhibit where the US is concerned, this indecisiveness reflects poorly on our people. We just might be for sale, eh?
Kindly take a look at the response of other Caribbean islands and outrage is the only description that can aptly describe their view. But hey, we haven't seen that communiqué yet!
I am, etc.,
