By Raymond Graham, Freelance WriterATHLETES TUNED up for this weekend's inter-collegiate and next week's VMBS/ISSA Boys and Girls Athletic Championship with some impressive performances at the G.C. Foster Classic last Saturday.
Highlight of the meet was the men's open 400m which included several of Jamaica's senior representatives. However, in the end they had to play second fiddle to G.C. Foster's Marvin Essor who led from start to finish to win in 46.5 seconds. Michael McDonald finished second in 46.9 and he was followed by Carlington Marsh of the University of Technology (47.9) and Neil Gardner of MVP 48.2.
Holmwood Technical's Jermaine Myers fresh, from his recent indoor 800m victory in New York, was quite relaxed in winning the boys Class 1 400m in 47.1, ahead of Jamaica College's Nelahdo Anderson, 47.9, and Adrian Phipps, 58.2.
In Class 2 action St. Jago's Dwight Mullings took the 100m in 10.7, and returned later win the 400m in 49.4 seconds ahead of JC's Andre Pratt, 49.8.
Jamaica College's Winston Barnes was outstanding in Class 3 taking the sprint double in 10.9 and 22.5.
St. Jago's girls continued their late surge with another good all-round performance.
Defending Class 1 double sprint champion Kerron Stewart was the fastest over the 200m as she won the event in 23.9 ahead of St. Elizabeth Technical's Davita Prendergast 24.3 and Alpha's Peaches Roache 24.9.
Herbert Morrison's Nickeisha Anderson took the Class 1 100m in 11.6 ahead of St. Jago's Tricia Henry, 11.9. However, Anderson (56.4) had to settle for second in the 400m as St. Jago's Clora Williams won in 56.0.
St. Jago's Trudian Davis won the Class 2 sprint double in 11.6 and 24.4. Edwin Allen's Sherline Duncan also recorded 11.6 seconds in the 100m with her team-mate Sherine Pinnock (55.6) winning the Class 2 400m ahead of Immaculate's Diane Deitrich 56.4 and St. Jago's Deidra Harrison.
Queen's Samantha Henry was the fastest in Class 3 as she won her heat in 11.7. Edwin Allen's Shakira Cole took the 200m in 24.2 while St. Jago's Tashagay Cunningham took the 400m in 56.3.
In Class 4 St. Jago's Deniesha Powell ruled supreme taking the 100m in 12.3 and the 200m in 25.9.
