Thumbs up for 'carbs '
published: Wednesday | March 26, 2003

FRUITS, LEGUMES, vegetables, whole-grain breads, oats and other cereals are all those yummy carbohydrate sources, also chock-full of fibre, which nutritionists always recommend.

And now the research is indicating that these fibre-rich carbs can actually reduce the risk of heart disease, reduce symptoms related to pre-diabetes syndrome and boost the health of the digestive tract.

Diets with adequate amounts of fibre-rich carbs, may be especially important for those with Syndrome X the Insulin Resistance Syndrome.

A report published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association (January 2003) says that there are limitations in some studies on the high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets often recommended for persons with this syndrome; these studies point to some adverse effects of a high intake of carbohydrates on some of the abnormalities in Syndrome X. However, the studies critical of the high-carb diets do not take into account the fibre in the diet.

What's the moral of the story? Not all carbs are equal. You can do without low-nutrition carbs such as white bread, past, white rice and alcoholic beverages but keep the high-fibre carbs.
