Art and beautification
published: Wednesday | March 26, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ART IN all its delightful forms exhilarates our senses in so many beautiful ways. The inclusion of visual art into the chemistry of any beautification initiative is very important. City and town planners need to take this into consideration and find ways to channel our island's artists (both amateur and professional) into beautification efforts around the island. Murals, sculptures and paintings can do so much for the aura of many areas in our country. It can be a natural vent for cultural expression and an added feature to our tourism product.

This initiative however cannot be carried out in isolation of other important elements necessary for beautification. It must involve harmonised efforts including the participation of government (local and national), art schools, environmental agencies, tourism interests, and art societies.

However, tourism should not be our prime motivation for the beautification of our communities and homes. The true motivation should be born out of civic and national pride. The spirits of our people can be uplifted so much more if art in all its positive forms was allowed its due exposure.

I am etc.,
