THE EDITOR, Sir:
THERE ARE some who think that the Government and people of Jamaica should support the American Government's policy towards Iraq regardless of what their conscience dictates. The suggestion that "we should not bite the hand that feeds us" and that we would benefit from the war goes against our principles.
I think those who believe we should follow lock, stock, and barrel with the policy of the US Government will sell Jamaica's sovereignty and self-respect as a nation for dole.
What they want Jamaica to do is no different than what some supporters of criminals in Jamaica do: Keep silent to robbery, rape and murder; aid and abet (wash blood-stained clothes of criminals) because they benefit (share the spoils) from the crimes.
Being against the war does not make one anti-American. I think America's friendship with Jamaica is stronger than any principled disagreement both countries have.
I am etc.,
