Gullies as roads

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM saddened at the passing of Pauline Gray, a bright, wonderful and effective professional that I had the great pleasure of working with some years ago. I am particularly saddened at the manner and untimeliness of her passing. I hope that Kim, Dr. Gray, and her other family and friends will find comfort in the memory of her wonderful and accomplished life.
What makes the passing so unacceptable is that it was totally unnecessary given the facts at hand. I have been concerned for some time that in 21st century Jamaica we continue to have legitimate roads passing through gullies. It is almost incomprehensible that successive governments have not seen fit to construct bridges over these waterways - that are predictably impassable whenever we have heavy rains.
Our governments over the years seem not to have been convinced that this is an important issue. Instead, they sometimes focus on those projects that they can easily tout during an election campaign. Building necessary bridges is obviously not sexy enough for our leaders. Maybe the valuable lives that have been lost over the years are not enough to convince them. Do we need more people to die by these means before we see action?
