Illegal guns
published: Thursday | April 10, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

A FEW days ago I was listening to an interview of a policeman on a popular radio talk-show. The topic was apparently about the most recent upsurge of gun violence in the Kingston and St. Andrew areas. At one point the interviewer asked, "So what about these guns, where do they come from?" The response to this was a sort of nervous giggle from the officer, and an almost imperceptible muttering about them coming in many ways. That was the end of that point right there, to my dismay.

My point is that this question needs to be asked much more persistently and widely, adequate responses should be demanded of those who are supposed to "protect" us. It is my view that much more can be and should be done to eliminate the constant flow of illegal guns and ammunition into our country. Otherwise the so-called fight against crime (read gunmanship and murder) will ever be a futile uphill battle.

I am, etc.,
