Councillors lash JPSCo
published: Monday | April 14, 2003

BLACK RIVER, St. Elizabeth:

THE JAMAICA Public Service Company (JPSCo), the country's main source of electricity, came under heavy criticism for not dealing adequately with the issue of the installation and replacement of malfunctioning street lights in St. Elizabeth, from the Councillors who attended the monthly meeting of the parish council in Black River last Thursday.

Councillor for the Balaclava division, Rodney Barnes, said that the JPSCo should be told of the sloppy way in which they treat the parish, as it related to the matter of replacement and installation of malfunctioning street lights in the various sections of the parish. He said that the level of dissatisfaction with the light and power company was high and that they need to do better.

"I would like this Council to write a letter to the management of the JPS outlining to them our dissatisfaction with the way how they treat the parish, as it relates to street light. I believe they have failed us by putting us into more darkness than light," said Councillor Barnes.

Councillor for the Lacovia division, Broderick Wright, said he had only received eight of the over 20 street lights requested for his division. He told the meeting that most of the districts in the area were still in darkness, due to the non-installation of street lights. He also challenged the company's management to come to areas such as Maggotty at nights to see what the people are going through.

The company also received a battering from Councillors Dorothy Buchanan of the Brompton division and Shirley Myers of the Southfield division. They agreed that the Council should send a letter to the JPSCo management, stating how displeased it was with its level of service in the parish.
