ST. THOMAS:
THE GOLDEN Grove Post Office in St. Thomas will be closing down and citizens in the area will have to access postal services at Morant Bay, approximately 10 miles away.
Councillor Beresford Steele, who represents the Dalvey Division which includes Golden Grove, revealed that a notice of closure had been posted on the present post office building. He said no reason has been given for the proposed closure. The Councillor said the citizens are disgruntled, as Morant Bay would be too far for them to travel and too expensive.
Councillor Steele said that, as Councillor for the area, he had been given no information about the closure. He said that he is very concerned about the poor and elderly who use the facility and how it is going to affect them.
Councillor Steele told the meeting that the citizens were concerned that with the PATH Programme making payments through the post office, travelling from Golden Grove to Morant Bay to collect would not be worth it.
Deputy Mayor Lance Comrie endorsed the concerns expressed by Councillor Steele, adding that all who cared about the poor must have the matter at heart.
In commenting on the matter, Mayor Owen Atkinson said that the Council would have to take some action to ensure that the post office at Golden Grove remain there.
