published: Monday | April 14, 2003

BLACK RIVER:

ONE OF three gunmen who held up and robbed persons, including tourists, at a cottage in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth on Saturday morning was shot dead by the police.

The man, who is in his mid-20s, has so far been unidentified, but he is about 5' 8" tall and was clad in a red vest and dark jeans pants.

An employee at 4M Cottage in Treasure Beach, and a tourist, were returning from a party at about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday when they held up by three gunmen, who took them through bushes to the cottage.

While at the cottage, the gunmen kicked open a door where a couple was staying and then robbed all four of cash, jewellery, cellular telephones and credit cards valued at about $100,000.

YELLOW VOLKSWAGEN

Citizens summoned the police, who spotted a yellow Volks-wagen car with registration number 4077 BG at the cottage. However, when the police approached it the driver sped away. The police gave chase and the car crashed into a fence near the cottage.

The driver escaped, but the police continued their search in the area until about 6 a.m. when they saw a man fitting the description of one of the gunmen.

Police alleged that he brandished a firearm and opened fired at the police, who returned the fire hitting him in the chest. He was taken to the Black River Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A 9 mm Rover pistol with its serial number erased and a magazine with two live rounds of ammunition, as well as a cellular telephone, cash and jewellery which were identified by the victims were found on the man's body. The police have since continued their search of the area for the other two gunmen.
